Cofradía de Volcanes

Llegué a vivir a Colima hace casi quince años. Desde entonces he fotografiado alrededor de los volcanes Nevado y Fuego, en la frontera entre Jalisco y Colima. Comencé influenciado por la tradición literaria y artística de la región, pero con el tiempo entendí que la fotografía era mi forma de arraigo — mi manera de reconocerme en un territorio que no era el mío.

Los volcanes imponen un paisaje en constante transformación. Las quemas agrícolas arrasan la vegetación seca cada temporada; los ríos bajan crecidos tras las lluvias, arrastrando rocas volcánicas; la niebla oculta y revela la montaña según las horas. La cámara registra esas variaciones, pero también construye algo que permanece: un imaginario visual en el que afirmo mi pertenencia a este lugar.

Cada imagen de montaña, río, bosque o fuego provoca una conexión emocional con un paisaje concreto y, al mismo tiempo, constituye una interpretación personal. El relieve cambiante nos envuelve y nos muestra el paso del tiempo — el mismo escenario donde cultivamos la memoria y definimos quiénes somos. ¿Cómo habitar un lugar que no es de origen? ¿Qué significa pertenecer a un territorio que uno elige?

El paisaje no responde, pero insiste. Y en esa insistencia — en volver a fotografiar la misma montaña, el mismo río, el mismo fuego — encuentro que este territorio ya forma parte de mi propia historia.

I moved to Colima almost 15 years ago. Since then, I have photographed around the Nevado and Fuego volcanoes, on the border between Jalisco and Colima. I began influenced by the region’s literary and artistic tradition, but over time I understood that photography was my way of taking root — my way of recognizing myself in a territory that was not my own.

The volcanoes impose a landscape in constant transformation. Agricultural burns consume dry vegetation each season, rivers run swollen after the rains, dragging volcanic rock, fog conceals and reveals the mountain according to the hour. The camera records these variations, but it also builds something that endures: a visual imaginary where I affirm my belonging to this place.

Each image of mountain, river, forest, or fire provokes an emotional connection to a specific landscape and, at the same time, constitutes a personal interpretation. The shifting terrain envelops us and shows us the passage of time — the same setting where we cultivate memory and define who we are. How does one inhabit a place that is not of origin? What does it mean to belong to a territory one chooses?

The landscape does not answer, but it insists. And in that insistence — in returning to photograph the same mountain, the same river, the same fire — I find that this territory has already become part of my own history.
